Handy (free) Web Development Cheat Sheets

After digging around the internets for a good list of HTML character entities I remembered finding and printing off their great Regular Expression cheat sheet at work and thougth there was a chance they might have a sheet for characters too.  How could I forget the name of the site… I Love Jack Daniels.

The top result in a Google search for “ilovejackdaniels” was AddedBytes.  After reading the blog post that explained why Dave the site’s owner had to rebrand after losing a battle with the owners of the Jack Daniels trade mark I quickly found the nicely organized cheat sheets area.

Here, in no particular order, are the seven cheat sheets I thought were worthy of downloading and printing.  Obviously the worthiness of a given cheat sheet will vary based on the kind of development you do…

  1. HTML
  2. PHP
  3. CSS
  4. MySQL
  5. JavaScript
  6. SVN
  7. HTML Character Entities

Dave also has a variety of other cheat sheets available.  Ranging from microformats and Ruby On Rails, to mod_rewrite and ASP / VBscript (bleh).  There is even a cheat sheet for World Of Warcraft!

I decided to download the files in PDF format and then use a GhostScript trick (included in OS X) to merge them into one PDF in the order I wanted.  There are also a number of good free tools available for Mac and PC that can help you complete that task.  I printed them duplexed at 1200dpi on my laser printer.  Using a slightly heaver bond paper helped prevent the back pages characters from showing or bleeding through.  All of the cheat sheets are well layed-out, and though they all contain a sizable amount of information they are quite readable.
Dave has also created  a Google Group to assist in the creation and enhancement of the cheat sheet series.  I look forward to seeing the project grow and evolve.
